The fight for healthy air in greater Washington is real. Breathe DC is leading the charge to bring clean, healthy air to local homes, workplaces and neighborhoods by stopping tobacco smoke. We’re working to educate smokers and non-smokers alike to take on tobacco and win, because the health and the lives of thousands of local residents are at stake.
Because as many as 1 in 3 DC residents is a smoker, lethal tobacco smoke is ever-present in our communities. That makes tobacco smoke the single most dangerous threat to healthy air—and healthy breathing—facing adults and children in Washington. Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds are toxic and about 70 can cause cancer. That means tobacco smoke has the ability to do serious harm to anyone who breathes it.
The good news about tobacco smoke: WE CAN STOP IT! We can help smokers quit. We can help housing communities go smokefree. We can safeguard our community spaces from smoke. By working together, we can take back the health of our communities from tobacco. Are you in?
